How to call a MAYDAY

4.1 Any member may use MAYDAY to report a firefighter who is in need of assistance.

4.2 To transmit a mayday state: MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY followed by the acronym L.I.P.

Repeat the following until Command replies:

Location i.e first floor sector alpha

Identification i.e Firefighter Joe Smith, badge # ****

Problem i.e low on air, trapped, disoriented, etc.

4.3 The MAYDAY shall receive priority radio traffic on that talk group. Incident Command will assign an alternate talk group to be used by all other crews on scene, with the exception of the firefighter who initiated the mayday, and the rapid intervention crews.

4.4 The firefighter initiating the mayday should implement the following survival techniques, for example:

turn on PASS

turn on flashlight

find a wall or window

locate a hose line

conserve air

4.5 The term URGENT will be used to report other emergencies and can also be used by all personnal. To transmit an urgent condition, state URGENT, URGENT. URGENT, followed by identification and the problem. (Example: URGENT, URGENT, URGENT -command portable rescue 1 structural collapse is imminent on E-4).
